It all began back in 1977, in
Wailuku, Hawaii. We were a small group of friends with a vision,
which soon grew into Down to Earth, an all-vegetarian natural
foods store. We were a grass-roots business whose mission
was to promote vegetarianism, healthy living, respect for
the environment, and sustainable organic farming.
We ran the tiny, 500-square-foot store on a shoestring budget
and lived by the motto: "simple living and high thinking."
We wanted to offer the community a place to shop and learn
about vegetarianism. Soon Down to Earth became known for providing
"healthy foods at prices that won't make you sick"
and gradually, more and more people in the community began
to adopt a healthier, vegetarian lifestyle.
Since then, Down To Earth has grown to become Hawaii's largest
natural foods chain and the largest all-vegetarian natural
foods chain in the country. In addition to our main store
in Honolulu, we've recently grown by opening up two new Oahu
stores in Kailua and Pearlridge. We also have one store on
Maui, located in Kahului.
Our success is based on our unshakable commitment to both
our mission and our customers. We've earned the loyalty of
both practicing and aspiring vegetarians because of our uncompromising
dedication.
Our supermarkets and community outreach programs are devoted
to helping people live a vegetarian lifestyle. And while our
customers appreciate our low prices, good customer service,
and wide selection of top-quality products, they also know
that we're not just in it for the money. We take pride in
staying true to our vegetarian principles and not carrying
meat, eggs, fish oils, gelatin capsules, products containing
animal rennet, and the like.
