Honor
a Turkey
By Angie Smith
If you have ever wondered what the best way
to stuff a turkey is, there is one special group of people
that would say it is with squash, cranberries, and pumpkin
pie, only there is one catch – that the dinner is for the
birds!
Farm Sanctuary will hold its annual Thanksgiving feast
for the turkeys this year at both of their shelter locations
in Orland, CA and Watkins Glen, NY. Farm staff and volunteers
prepare a wonderful buffet for the turkeys, honoring them
with a feast rather than making them the main course.
In 1986 Gene and Lorri Bausten founded Farm Sanctuary after
they discovered and rescued a living sheep abandoned on a
stockyard “deadpile.” In that same year they
began their annual Adopt-A-Turkey Project, which gives caring
people the opportunity to adopt a turkey. With the one-time
fee of $15, a person receives a bio and a picture of their
bird. The project also helps to place turkeys in loving vegetarian
homes.
