Locavorism, for those who haven't heard the term, describes the practice of buying food grown within a 100 mile radius of where one lives, in an effort to cut back on one's carbon footprint. Once upon a time, access to imported, specialty items was reserved for the rich or well-connected connoisseur. Now, however, the committed locavore has to go far out of his or her way to forage enough food from their local region to survive. A friend alerted me to this one. Supposedly eating tofu increases one’s carbon footprint more than eating red meat. Vegetarianism is bad for the planet.

So said The London Times, the Daily Mail, The Australian and other conservative media outlets this past week (February 22-26, 2010). [1]

You may have seen it. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jason Bateman and other celebrities in a YouTube ad, asking us to email our senators to support a bill on clean energy jobs. HR 2454 to be exact. A recent editorial column in the Honolulu Advertiser made an extremely controversial point you don’t often hear – which is that the real problem causing global warming is that there are too many people in the world, and the world's population is continuing to grow making the problem worse.

Thus the columnist suggested that one way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to implement widespread birth control, i.e. make contraceptives and abortion widely available to women around the world, especially in developing countries which are experiencing rapid population growth. Keep Reading →
