| Water Fluoridation |
|
| |
The State of Hawai'i does not add fluoride
to the public water supply, but the issue comes up during
every legislative session. There are important reasons for
continuing to SAY NO TO WATER FLUORIDATION.
|
| Fluoridation
is medication without consent |
| If our public water
supply is fluoridated, people will be forced to take a medication
whether they want it or not, taking away freedom of choice.
|
| Fluoride
accumulates in the body |
| Several studies
conclude that fluoride accumulates in the bones, making them
brittle and prone to fracture. Researchers believe that it
accumulates in the pineal gland and other tissues as well.
|
| The
benefits of fluoride are questionable |
The largest survey conducted
in the US showed only a minute difference in tooth decay between
children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities. The
worst tooth decay in the US occurs in the poor neighborhoods
of our largest cities, the vast majority of which have been
fluoridated for decades.
|
| Fluoride
is extremely toxic |
Just 2 grams (about a teaspoon)
of fluoride can kill an adult. The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has never approved a fluoride product designed
to be ingested.
|
| The fluoridating
agent is a hazardous waste product from the phosphate fertilizer
industry |
The chemicals used to fluoridate
water are not pharmaceutical grade. They come from the wet
scrubbing systems of the fertilizer industry and are classified
as hazardous waste.
|
| Some people
are particularly susceptible to fluoride's toxic effects |
Fluoride is present in prepared
foods and beverages, and most people now receive "optimal"
levels without drinking water from the tap. The Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry states that some people
may be "unusually susceptible to the toxic effects of
fluoride and its compounds," and they may be at-risk
from added fluoride in the water supply.
|
| 98% of
Western Europe has rejected water fluoridation |
Several studies indicate that
dental decay rates are decreasing just as fast in non-fluoridated
industrialized countries as in those that fluoridate their
water supply.

The EPA
Headquarters Union calls for a "National Moratorium
on Fluoridation" |
Dr. J. William Hirzy, vice president
of the union representing scientists and professionals at
the EPA Headquarters, wrote: "In summary, we hold that
fluoridation is an unreasonable risk. That is, the toxicity
of fluoride is so great and the purported benefits associated
with it are so small - if there are any at all - that requiring
every man, woman, and child in America to ingest it borders
on criminal behavior on the part of governments." |
