| Organic Farming |
|
| |
Organic farming, or organic agriculture,
is a method of raising crops and livestock without the use
of sewer sludge fertilizers, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides,
genetic engineering, growth hormones, irradiation or antibiotics.
Animals are not given hormones to promote growth or antibiotics
for any reason. Rather than battling the "pests"
in nature, organic agriculture works with nature to encourage
long-term soil fertility and promote biodiversity.

| Organic
Farming is good for the earth |
- It promotes biodiversity of the
soil and surrounding environment.
- It ensures that hazardous chemicals
will not infiltrate our groundwater.
- It is energy efficient.
|
| Organic
farming is good for the farmer |
- It produces crop yields that are
equivalent to conventional methods.
- It is economically beneficial. According
to a recent statement from the USDA,
"Organic food production allows farmers to lower input
costs,
decrease reliance on renewable resources, capture high-value
markets and premium prices, and boost farm income."
|
| Organic
food is good for our bodies |
- It keeps harmful chemicals and preservatives
out of our bodies.
- It is more nutritious because the
nutrients, minerals and
enzymes in the soil are not depleted.
- Studies suggest that organic food
tastes better than conventionally grown food.

| How do
I know if a product is Organic? |
| On October 21 0f 2002,
the USDA, in partner with the National Organic Program (NOP)
implemented new regulations for organic products. Foods are
now labeled as 100% organic, 95% organic or "made with
organic ingredients." Come to Down to Earth for quality
organic foods. Feel good about what you eat and help the earth
at the same time. |
