Alternative Choices for Pain Relief

In the recent wake of Vioxx’s removal from the market, the FDA has extended their concern to two other popular prescription drugs, Celebrex and Bextra. The potential side effects of these widely used medications are a concern for many patients and doctors. But without these drugs, most are at a loss for effective pain remedies treating ailments such as joint inflammation and arthritis. Fortunately there are alternative choices, and the more avenues taken the better chances one has for relief.

Diet: Maintain ideal bodyweight. There are many painful complications that are aggravated by excess body weight. Eat a variety of healthy, whole foods that are low in fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar. Avoid alcohol and purine-rich foods such as organ meats, sardines, and anchovies, as they can trigger gout attacks by elevating blood uric acid levels. Be aware of foods that could cause allergy-related inflammation, including dairy products, nightshade vegetables, caffeine, sugar, chocolate, red meats, and additives/preservatives.

Supplements: Natural antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, vegetarian glucosamine, MSM, homeopathic remedies, tart cherry extracts, herbs, aromatherapy…. supplements and remedies for pain, arthritis or other inflammation issues abound in the Down to Earth Wellness Centers. Come in and let our knowledgeable staff help you sort through the choices.

Exercise: Regular exercise to increase fitness, mobility, range-of-motion, flexibility, balance, endurance, and muscular strength is vital for people living with the pain and limitations of arthritis and joint inflammation. Gain the benefits of gentle exercise and relaxation through yoga, tai chi, meditation, water exercise, and walking. With any new activity, it is important to take proper precautions. Talk with your doctor about whether you should observe any limitations or restrictions.

Alternative treatments: Explore the benefits of acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic, and Ayurvedic medicine by speaking with specialists in these areas of healing.
