Meat selling retailers win "Most Humane Grocery Store" award

Grocery stores selling "humane meat" won awards for being the most humane grocery stores. Now that is an oxymoron (according to Wikipedia an oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms) if ever I heard one, "humane meat", there is no such thing, give me a break. (Warning graphic language concerning the reality of meat follows) meat is brutally murdered animal flesh, and no matter how you look at it, raising an animal simply to kill and eat it is not "humane".

Ok ok, I know you might be thinking "oh there goes Mark again doing his extreme vegetarian thing"; I do agree that if you are going to raise animals and murder and eat them, that it is better to do it in a way that causes the least amount of pain to the animal while you do it, so it is progress that several grocery stores are trying to see to it that the murdered animals they sell are treated better and that a brutal industry is taking small steps to treat animals better. We should look for the good and praise that and magnify it, and encourage them to go even further, and while doing so we should keep in mind the truth of what we are dealing with. Meat is murder.

The following is from the Progressive Grocer Magazine story about this award:

“The survey results indicate that people are becoming more sensitive to the cruel and unsustainable methods used to raise farm animals and are seeking humane alternatives when they shop, regardless of cost,” noted Dena Jones, U.S. programs director for WSPA. “Consumer demand influences what stores offer, and it is encouraging to see grocers responding by increasing humane food options even in a recession.”

WSPA’s 2009 survey tracked products in four categories: dairy, eggs, unprocessed meat and poultry, and processed meat and poultry (bacon, ham, hot dogs). The organization ranked stores according to a point system based on the quality and variety of the food products available on the shelves.

Love Life! Love animals, don't eat them.
