Mindfulness to Relieve Stress During the Holidays

The holidays are the most anticipated time of the year, but they can also be the most overwhelming. One of our greatest tools for combatting holiday stress is a solid mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness has been defined as the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing. Embracing the present moment and noticing our surroundings, feelings, and sensations can ultimately keep us grounded when the season’s stressors try to sweep us away. Treat your body and mind with kindness this season, and don’t let holiday overwhelm cut into precious time with family and friends.

Here are a few simple ways to cultivate mindfulness throughout the day:

  • Breathe deeply, slowly, and gently
  • Notice any tension/stress being harbored in the body
  • Put on the pause button. Take small breaks to slow down, check in with yourself and your feelings, and rest in a moment of peace and quiet.
  • Relax with a guided meditation when the day is over. Practice progressive relaxation either seated or laying down and one by one, relax each part of the body with every exhale breath.
