Join Yogarden founders Kelly Stern and Paul Izak as they share the simple tips & techniques for growing your own food in Hawaii.  In this class, you will learn about some of the more simple to grow foods in Hawaii and how to use them, such as kalo(taro), cassava(tapioca root/yuca), olena (turmeric), uala(sweet potato) and more. Kelly, who is also a vegan chef and founder of Goldielocks Grinds Hawaii, will share simple recipes and techniques on how to prepare and enjoy these homegrown goodies. Come be a part of this food movement towards a more regenerative and sustainable Hawaii.

Join Down to Earth team members on a volunteer farm work day to help Ho'oulu 'Aina, a 100 acre non-profit farm, that is part of Kokua Kalihi Valley. We'll be harvesting, weeding, and planting new gardens. 

Please wear/bring: Boots, Farm Work Clothes, Hat, Gloves, Water Bottle, and Sunscreen. Be prepared to get muddy! Carpooling is strongly encouraged as there is very limited parking.

Televised Chef Catherine Blake, B.A., B.D., has been studying nutrition and health for over 30 years. She has been creating delicious, plant-based meals for 25 years. Catherine earned a certificate in micronutrition in 2008 and is currently studying the role of food fats in health. Catherine has a deep understanding of the effects of food on health. Catherine has taught many classes at University of Hawaii, Maui Campus since 2008, in Palo Alto, CA, in the Hamptons, NY, and elsewhere. In March, 2014, Catherine was nutritional chef instructor at the Healthy Brain Seminar sponsored by Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience at Castle Medical Center in Kailua. Catherine gently teaches how to choose and prepare food to prevent dementia at Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience.
Catherine is author of the cookbook Healthy Recipes for Friends and has two videos, Aloha Saucesand The Maui Light Diet. Catherine graduated from Skidmore College and is an Interfaith minister. She lives on Maui with her husband Steve and many happy animals of the rainforest.

The 22nd Annual Haiku Ho`olaule`a and Flower Festival to benefit Haiku Elementary School, Haiku Community Association and Boys & Girls Club Maui-Haiku will be held Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at the Haiku Community Center and Haiku Elementary School grounds in Haiku, Maui.  The event is FREE.

Down to Earth will be giving away free food samples in the Community Living Booth.

The Maui community and visitors alike are invited to spend the day, bring their families and lawn chairs and join the Haiku community to enjoy fabulous live entertainment, culinary delights from local restaurants and the Haiku Ohana, the famous Haiku School bake sale, one of the largest silent auctions on Maui, floral design contest, a Haiku historical display, plenty of activities for Keiki and much more.
