Veganuary

by Alison Riggs

Have you heard of Veganuary? Veganuary is a non-profit organization started in UK that encourages people worldwide to try a vegan diet for January and beyond. During the 2019 campaign, over a quarter of a million people took the pledge to try a vegan diet. More than 500 brands, restaurants, and supermarkets have promoted the campaign. Throughout the year, Veganuary encourages and supports people and businesses alike to move to a plant-based diet as a way of protecting the environment, preventing animal suffering and improving the health of millions of people. Why do people choose to pledge to participate in Veganuary?

The Veganuary mission is admirable: “Our vision is simple; we want a vegan world. A world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction.”

Actress Alicia Silverstone, a Veganuary supporter, said: "Despite all of our recycling, energy-saving, and water conversation (all of which are great), most people still don’t know that they can have the greatest impact on our precious Planet Earth by adopting a plant-based diet."

Participating in Veganuary is a great option for a New Year’s resolution, if you’re still looking for one. January always feels like a fresh start with a sparkling clean slate. There’s a kind of magic in the air that gives us hope for a new and better future for ourselves. Don’t be discouraged by past New Year’s resolutions that have been forgotten far too quickly. Start with a small and simple step forward for 2020. The most popular resolution seems to be some version of “eat healthier”. That may mean committing to veganism/vegetarianism, Meatless Mondays, a keto diet, eating less sugar, or buying more organic produce. Whatever you choose, make it an obtainable goal with achievable steps and an action plan.

Remember: A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action becomes reality.
