For over 35 years...We've been Hawaii’s leading local, organic & natural vegetarian food store chain.
Our CEO and "Chief Organic Officer," Mark Fergusson recently announced that we will be requiring all products in our store with ingredients containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to be labeled as such by 2018. The Organic Consumers Association wants to acknowledge and promote the best practices of those retailers who are doing their best to promote organic and non-GMO products. Please take a moment to email patrick@organicconsumers.org about what Down to Earth is doing to support your right to know. (If you are not sure what we are doing, read below!) Include the name and address of your store, such as: Down to Earth, 2525 S.King St, Honolulu, HI (or the store nearest you), the name of the owner or manager: Mark Fergusson CEO, and a brief explanation of what we are doing right. (You can use a version of our GMO policy below, in your own words of course!)
What we believe...
We believe in providing foods as nature intended them - foods that are good for you and the environment. In our view GMOs pose health and environmental risks.
What we are doing...
As we move toward our long term goal of being all organic and GMO free, we are gradually eliminating, and avoid adding, products that may contain GMOs.
In addition, we...
- Require all GM products to be labeled as such by 2018 (and probably sooner).
- Give preference to products that are organic or are Non-GMO Project Verified
- Don’t sell single ingredient GMO foods including papaya, corn, soy, canola or sugar
